Crusader Imagery in Monumental Art in the West

The goal of my research project is to understand the perceptions of the crusades by their contemporaries and near-contemporaries. While almost all studies of the crusades are based on chronicles, the goal of my project is to look at crusading warfare from a different perspective, examining visual representations of the crusades in monumental art in Western Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. Compared to texts, mural paintings and sculpture provide an original point of view on the perceptions of the crusades, the crusaders and their enemy. The current site – to be updated regularly – includes pictures and brief descriptions of some of the monuments that I will be examining.
